ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE? Last week I met a young girl on a limited income who had just been informed that they had underestimated her tax obligations, and she owed the IRS nearly $3,000. Paying it was impossible. Or was it?
It’s funny how, without realizing it, we become double-minded about miracles. We have two categories of needs: those we figure are just “reasonably possible” for God to answer and are worth a try in prayer, and those we believe are “absolutely impossible.”
The second category could keep us awake nights wallowing in despair, but take heart. Remember, Jesus made no distinction between “reasonably possible” and “absolutely impossible” answers to prayer. He realized it’s all one miracle-working God, and thus, He slept well despite the size of the need.
Believe it or not, Jesus too had a tax problem! How did He resolve it? One day Peter let the Pharisees goad him into promising to pay taxes neither he nor Jesus owed. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free! However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the shore and throw in a line, and open the mouth of the first fish you catch. You will find a coin to cover the taxes for both of us; take it and pay them” (Matthew 17:26-27, TLB).
You seldom hear this scripture preached in a sermon...perhaps because it sounds too “far out.” But, if God performed “absolutely impossible” miracles for Jesus, He’ll perform them for you, too. We have the same God!
